Spell It Out (2016 Book Bingo Review)

When I put the box for “a book that will make you smarter” on my book bingo card last year, I had no clue what I would actually end up reading. Not that I don’t enjoy reading non-fiction, but I couldn’t think of ANYTHING at the time that I would want to read for that category. I like to listen to the podcast A Way With Words and when they mentioned the book Spell It Out by David Crystal I knew I had to read it!

I was an English major in school and I’m still a bit of a word nerd, so this was RIGHT up my alley! It went through the history of spelling, how words were formed, how they came to be in English, and why we spell words the way we do today. It was actually really interesting!!!

It was a lot of information… I will admit that. And if you’re not really REALLY interested in the English language it might be kind of hard to get through. BUT what I liked most about this book was that it was broken up into really short chapters that had a very logical flow. So that way if you didn’t want to read all about spelling nonstop, you could read a short chapter every few days and not get overwhelmed.

This book will definitely make you feel a little bit smarter and I highly recommend it! Crystal has a lot of other books regarding the English language and I definitely want to read them at some point!
